Two timeless masterpieces inspired by their composers' visits to another land: Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony 9 from the New World and George Gershwin’s American in Paris. Dvorak wrote his New World while away from his Czech home to direct the National Conservatory of Music in New York from 1892 to 1895, completing the composition in Spillville, Iowa.  American in Paris, which premiered in 1928, was inspired by time that New Yorker Gershwin had spent there.  He wrote:  "My purpose here is to portray the impression of an American visitor in Paris as he strolls about the city and listens to various street noises and absorbs the French atmosphere."

In addition, cellist Jack Boettcher of Naperville, the winner of our 2016 solo competition for teen musicians, will join us to perform Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme.

West Suburban Symphony presents:

June 26 in Naperville

@ 4:30 pm

Be moved by some of the most powerful, and most beautiful, music written:  Carl Orff’s 1936 secular cantata Carmina Burana for orchestra, chorus and vocal soloists... introduced by Tomaso Albinoni’s Adagio for strings and organ. Carmina Burana is the name of a collection of 254 poems and dramatic texts, mostly from the 11th and 12th centuries, that were discovered in a German monastery in the early 1800s.  Orff selected 24 of them for this hugely popular composition that captures the spirit of medieval times, with infectious rhythms and simple harmonies.

Three exceptional Chicago soloists join us for this performance:  soprano Elizabeth Norman, countertenor Carl Alexander, and baritone Warren Moulton.  Hear the opening of Carmina Burana.

Special note:  this 80-minute concert will start at 4:30 pm and be performed without intermission.
